The accreditable UPMMUN initiative will recreate a United Nations debate in English. This activity, which consists of training and practical sessions, is aimed at fostering students’ transversal skills.

28-02-2022

Our School (ETSIAAB), with the support of the Applied Linguistics Department, launches the training activity known as UPMMUN (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid - Model United Nations), an initiative included in the ETSIAAB Passport. After completing this activity, the participants will be awarded 1.5 ECTS. The training sessions and the event (Model) will take place during the months of March and April 2022.

There will be three training days for the new participants and three more active days called Model. The activity will consist in carrying out a simulation in English of the meetings held by the United Nations committees. The participants will be representing different countries and debating on a previously agreed topic. Additionally, they will be required to reach agreements within the FAO committee while following the official UN debating procedure.

The training sessions, which will allow delegates to learn how the model works, will take place on March 11 and 18 and April 1. Each session will last 2 hours and 30 minutes. The event known as Model will take place on April 27, 28, and 29, with a total of 13 hours spread over the three days. In these sessions, students will put into practice the skills learned during the training sessions.

Aimed preferably at undergraduate students, the objective of this activity, lasting 20.5 hours, is to allow students to develop transversal skills such as oral and written communication, analysis, and critical reasoning or the use of the English language. Moreover, it will encourage participation in activities in which students can develop their public speaking and negotiating skills, seeking solutions to current and relevant issues on a global scale.

This new initiative is the topic addressed in the third episode of Linguists at the ETSIAAB, a Radio Savia, podcast program, which is now available.
