Several members of SureMap have gathered at the School of Agricultural, Food and Biosystems Engineering (ETSIAAB - UPM). This project, funded by the European Union, aims to create interdisciplinary studies to train engineers in recovering arid areas in Egypt. In particular, it seeks to recover an area of 6.3 billion m2. Other water, energy, and food challenges will also be met within the framework of Egypt's vision 2030, an agenda launched in 2016 to achieve the principles and objectives of sustainable development in all areas.

The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) is one of the partners of this alliance, which also includes other educational institutions such as The American University in Cairo (Egypt), RWTH Aachen University (Germany) or the University of Palermo (UNIPA) (Italy), companies such as ISIS or the SEKEM DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION.

The UPM team is led by professor Leonor Rodríguez Sinobas (Department of Agroforestry Engineering - ETSIAAB). She has extensive knowledge in hydraulic engineering as the UPMWater community coordinator. The team has supervised and assisted in all aspects of the quality of the four master's programs developed in the Egyptian universities that are part of the project: Aswan University, Alexandria University, The American University in Cairo, and Heliopolis University. Together with international evaluators, they have participated in and advised on evaluating the contents, methodologies, and assessment of the more than 90 courses that make up the programmes.

The visit promoted sharing the results of the first two semesters of the four master's programmes developed in Egyptian universities. Partners also took into account future collaboration.

The objectives to be achieved by this ambitious project are oriented toward curricula combining knowledge of solar technology, soil science, hydrology and irrigation, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and urban planning, and ecological and environmental aspects. UPM and ETSIAAB seek to create joint projects to promote efficient agriculture and resource use in the Egyptian country.

To reach these goals, the UPM team has also arranged other sessions of the International Advisory Committee of the project where different members of the 'Irrigation Hydraulics' (HIDER) research group of the ETSIAAB, such as Raúl Sánchez, Daniel Alberto Segovia, Sergio Zubelzu and Luis Juana, have participated.
